In the Laurisilva Forest
Laurisilva Forest, Madeira, Spain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site ~ Ancient trees live in the valley bottoms within the Parque Natural da Madeira (Madeira Natural Park). Most of the property is believed to have never been felled & includes some massive old trees, possibly over 800 years old. This is a remnant of a previously widespread laurel forest type, which covered much of Southern Europe 15-40 million years ago. The forest is mainly comprised of evergreen trees & bushes, with flat, dark green leaves. A large proportion of its plants & animals are unique to the laurel forest.

Laurisilva is a type of laurel forest that in the past was spread throughout Europe but today is practically extinct. The paleobotanical record of the island of Madeira reveals that this forest existed on the island at least 1.8 million years ago. It is the largest surviving laurel forest remaining & believed to be 90% primordial, with some massive old trees, possibly over 800 years old, which have been growing since before the island was settled. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999 for its unique biological diversity. #Floresta_Laurissilva_da_Madeira Europe, World Heritage Sites, Island, Heritage Center
