Capitalism began in England around the 16th century. They immediately went on to colonize half the planet in search of new markets, committed multiple genocides, traded slaves, and engaged in constant war. In school we learn about how communism is evil because of a famine. ~ @existentialcoms
Marx always made the point that work--labour--is good, it's fulfilling, it has been a natural drive of humanity forever. What's degrading about work today is the social relations that sustain it (wage labour and the extraction of surplus value). Labour itself is not degrading. ~ @JoshuaYJackson

What's weird is you get called radical just for pointing out reality. People are homeless while millions of homes are empty. People are hungry while tons of food is thrown out People can't pay for healthcare while trillions of dollars sit offshore. These are simply facts. ~ @JoshuaPotash

Explaining Capitalism to Aliens - Source: Existential Comics
Aliens: "Explain to us: How do you decide how to allocate resources and who does what work on Earth?" Capitalist: [showing charts] "So you see, on Earth we have a free market, so resources are efficiently allocated to meet the needs of the people based on market principles like supply and demand. Entrepreneurs own the factories and workers sell their labor to them." Aliens: "How can you 'own' a factory?"...
If you voted Republican because you fear socialism, then live your truty. Do not accept Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. Avoid public beachers, parks and libraries. Do not allow your children to attend tax-supported schools or to take advantage of food programs. Drive only on toll roads. Artificial scarcity is a feature of capitalism...
Artificial scarcity is a feature of capitalism. Empty houses surround homeless people, tones of food waste encircle hungry people & unused medical resources sit idle near dying people. A commodified world that "takes necessities from the masses to giver luxuries to the classes" ~ MLK

People once thought slavery was "part of human nature" and would last forever. They once thought the same about feudalism and monarchy. Imagine: some people today think that about capitalism. ~ @profwolff

2020 showed US capitalism's real priorities
60 mil claimed unemployment, used up savings, & asked for help. 10 mil face eviction; 8 mil fell into poverty. But 600+ US billionaires got richer by $1 trillion. Capitalists buy governments to keep this system, pandemic or not. ~ @profwolff
Capitalism produces ecological crisis for the same reason it produces inequality: because the fundamental mechanism of capitalist growth is that capital must extract (from nature and labour) more than it gives in return. ~ @jasonhickel Ecology, Economics

Always amazed at how many people on this site have capitalism Stockholm's syndrome. Imagine being furious at the suggestion that people could be paid more for work. ~ @deadeyebrakeman Capitalism stockholm's syndrome is so accurate omg. This is how I feel when people get made about their coworkers taking time off. "They're making me have to do more work." Nope, that's actually the corporation exploiting your ass 🙂. People deserve money and breaks, I promose. ~ @missplace_d

The essence of capitalism is to turn nature into commodities and commodities into capital. The live green earth is transformed into dead gold bricks, with luxury items for the few and toxic slag heaps for the many. The glittering mansion overlooks a vast sprawl of shanty towns, wherein a desperate, demoralized humanity is kept in line with drugs, television and armed force. ~ Michael Parenti, Against Empire
