Junin is a mostly mountainous region in central Peru. There are 1,274,781 people on 17,065 sq mi (44,197 sq km) or about 30 percent larger than Maryland. Huancayo is near the southern boundary and is the capital. The region is dominated by the Altiplano and the eastern part is the upper Amazon region. Pasco is N, Ucayali is E, Cusco is E and S, Ayacucho and Huancavelica is S, and Lima is SW and W.
