Maybe in the midst of our grief and trauma, we don't think that's possible, but then a day comes when we find ourselves pulling inspiration from that same space we once felt suffocated from. Honouring the existence of all my emotions and using those feelings as fuel, is how this painting came to be. And we are all capable of transmuting our hardships into something helpful, valuable, and moving to others. Our hearts hold a vast potential, and we are limitless when we operate from these heights. Limitless. I believe that's why people from all over the world have been resonating with "Surrender" - especially this past year. We are facing challenges we've never faced, sensations we've never felt, and growing at a painfully accelerated rate. And there is no bypassing it, no shortcuts to the process, only moving through it with as much patience and grace as we possibly can. Witnessing the darkness that is revealing itself in such a potent way, demands that we expand into deeper love. We are finding ourselves on our knees, over and over, aren't we? And so with no big surprise Surrender seems to be the theme for many right now. These have lifted me up on days I find myself struggling too. Who knew something I created to alchemize my own pain, would not only be pleasing to lay eyes on but would generate a little hope on the planet too. This painting was inspired by moments in my yoga practice where I was able to allow waves of emotion to flow through me. Moments, where I went from energetically holding on to truly letting go. A rush of energy. Rising up. Bursting sensations. My mat is a space where I have experienced both beautiful love and intense heartache. Through my yoga practice, I have found immense healing and spiritual connection. After losing two of my best girlfriends, my heartfelt shattered and closed off not just to the pain but even the love around me. Yoga helped me release the grief that once consumed me and helped me to experience joy again. Camel pose is an asana that has triggered this release for me many times before. It’s both challenging and freeing at the same time. Through colour and movement, I wanted to capture the multitude of sensations that show up. For me, this pose can lead to feelings of lightness and expansion, as if I have made a little more room inside for self-love and compassion. This painting encompasses the internal beauty that is revealed as we fully surrender and open our hearts.
