Washita Massacre Site, Cheyenne, OK (November 1868) Custer & the 7th U.S. Cavalry launched an early morning attack on friendly Indians camped on the Washita River in present day Oklahoma. Estimates of Indians killed range from 15 to 150. Chief Black Kettle was among the dead. The scout James S. Morrison wrote Indian Agent Col. Wynkoop that twice as many women & children as warriors had been killed during the attack.
