Soprano Mirella Freni (originally Fregni) was born February 27, 1935 in Modena, Italy. Freni made her operatic debut in Modena as Micaela in CARMEN in 1955. Known for her youthful voice and looks, Freni sang her final stage role - a teenaged Joan of Arc - at age 70. Fun fact: Freni sang "Un bel di vedrema" in a radio competition at age ten and was warned by tenor Beniamino Gigli not to sing until she was older, so gave it up until she was seventeen!
