The USS Inaugural, a former Navy minesweeper, became a floating museum on the St. Louis riverfront in 1968. The 650-ton, 185-foot-long ship was built near Seattle in 1944 and saw action during the 1945 Battle of Okinawa. Robert E. O'Brien bought it from the Navy and brought it to St. Louis. It was there until the flood of 1993, which broke its moorings. The Inaugural was rescued and tied to a barge south of downtown, but sank Sept. 23, 1993. (Robert C. Holt Jr., St. Louis Post-Dispatch)
