Friedrich von der Pfalz was born in 1596 & reigned as Elector Palatine of the Holy Roman Empire from 1610 to 1623 & as King of Bohemia from 1619 to 1620. Frederick V's defeat with his defeat at the Battle of White Mountain on 8 November 1620 (a year & four days after his coronation) brought about 398 years of foreign subjugation for the Czech people & earned him the scathing sobriquet 'der Winterkönig' in Bohemia as the Thirty Years' War spread throughout the empire...

Louis XIV's nephew Philippe served as regent of France during Louis XV's minority (1715-23); one of the most remarkable figures in French history, despite his débauches, the Duc d'Orléans was a conscientious ruler & even a progressive one by the standards of his day; his one mistake was the catastrophic error of trusting the Scottish speculator John Law, who created the Mississippi Bubble, the Bernie Madoff pyramid scheme of its day; New Orleans is named for Philippe (1674-1723)
