Repinned by Elizabeth VanBuskirk in "Teaching about the Incas." Here are Inca tupu pins used to hold a woman's manta over the shoulders. These look they are gold, from the Inca period about 1500.There are colonial portraits, painted right after the conquest which show how royal Inca women dressed. In some Andean areas today women still use tupus but are usually now in the form of large decorative safety pins (especially Bolivia.)
