The Puritans law during the 1600's where the Scarlet Letter is taken place, was extremely strict. Men and women were severely punished for a variety of crimes simply because those "crimes" broke the Puritan religious beliefs. You can imagine how Hester Prynne, the (Main character) woman in Scarlet Letter was treated because the whole story is about how she had an affair and conceived a daughter from that affair and how she struggles to create a new life because of the harsh Puritan ways.
