Luca Pacioli, 1445 - 1517. Considered "father of accounting." Italian mathematician, Franciscan friar, friend of Leonardo di Vinci. Published first description of double-entry accounting used by Venice merchants. Described journals, ledgers, debits = credits, accounts on balance sheet & income statement, YE closing entries, trial balances. Also wrote on accounting ethics and cost accounting.
