One of my most suggested tips is to learn to pause and make partial motifs of whatever background freemotion design you are doing. Making elements like this seem to disappear under other elements is a subtle but advanced looking change you can make to your freemotion quilting. Also, this trick would let me work larger scale too, as I don’t need to smoosh smaller and smaller elements into narrowing gaps. I find freehand only fun if the grid of the clamshell is 1” or smaller. Since one edge of my lavender lines ruler has a 1” half circle cutout just for this purpose, I used it in a recent quilt sample. I love it, since there isn’t any marking necessary beyond a base line. Stencils are also a great way to mark a clamshell for quilting. In all these cases, pausing and adding an embellishment at the corner of each repeat is a terrific way to spice them up. Also, the quilting acts as compression of the batting and gives them great shadowing!
