Drying oils, like linseed, poppy and safflower, are vegetable oils you can mix with oil colours to change drying time, consistency and gloss. They also prevent overthinning with solvent, allowing you to work with more fluid colour while maintaining the integrity of your paint film. Over time they oxidise, creating a solid, elastic, durable film. #oilpainting #oilmediums #dryingoil #artsupplies #kenbromleyartsupplies Art, Dry Oil, Winsor & Newton, Different Textures, Vegetable Oil, Art Materials, Art Supplies, Oil Painting, Elastic

Nic Thurman on Instagram: "F4T Over Lean - A Common Misconception About the Oil Painting Process.

You don’t actually need to add increasing amounts of oil to your painting through the layers. It’s okay to continue painting as long as you don’t paint lean over f4t.

To be clear, adding solvent to your paint will make it leaner. That’s why I use it for the first layer. This clip is from a longer video talking about painting with only linseed oil as a medium.

This is taken from my new course the Basics of Oil Painting. In the full video I explain the fundamental principles of layering.
