Fifty-four years ago, Vernon Earl Monroe (aka Earl the Pearl | Black Jesus) was featured in the March 6, 1967 issue of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED while he was playing basketball at Winston-Salem State. Frank Deford wrote these words: Winston-Salem, N.C. The State College there has a student body almost all Negro, and the entire team is colored.
