Selknam initiation ceremony. The Selknam (also known as the Ona) were an indigenous people in southern Argentina and Chile, including the Tierra del Fuego islands. They were one of the last aboriginal groups in South America to be encountered by ethnic Europeans or Westerners in the late 19th century. The last ethnic Selknam died in the mid 20th century.

The last surviving full-blooded Selk'nam (Ona) of Tierra del Fuego. Anthropologist Anne Chapman estimated that a little over hundred years ago the Selk'nam numbered probably between 3,500 and 4,000. They were decimated by loss of habitat, European diseases and the Selknam Genocide. Incredibly sad.....
