Yellow wildflowers blanket the valley floor in Zion National Park in late summer. This painting captures the first light of dawn striking the Court of the Patriarchs, as seen from the Pa'rus Trail. Thick brush strokes of oil paint laid side by side, without layering, capture the texture and color of the landscape.
Cottonwood trees line the road into the canyons of Zion National Park. In autumn their leaves turn brilliant shades of yellow. I love painting their bright colors against a backdrop of deep amethyst canyon walls.

This painting of the Grand Canyon was inspired by the first time I ever saw the Grand Canyon in person, a few years ago. Since then I have revisted the canyon at different times of the day, and this October I will be backpacking down into the canyon to explore it from a different viewpoint. The vibrant colors and repeating patterns of the landscape are surprising and awe-inspiring when seen in person, and I wanted to capture some of that wide expanse of drama in this large oil painting.

Atmospheric conditions must be just right for a fiery sunset to light the sky. When you first enter Arches National Park, one of my favorite vistas to paint is immediately to your left-hand side. You can see beautiful fins of red rock sandstone overlapping into the far distance. It is most beautiful at dawn. This painting captures the scene with luscious colors of pink and orange.
Arches National Park is one of my favorite national parks to paint. The clean, abstract rock formations make great painting compositions, and the buttery colors of sandstone rock allow me to use the full range of my palette from creamy yellow to butternut orange to vivid purple. This painting captures the famous double arches at Arches National Park.

Following the Colorado River north of Moab and Arches National Park, early one morning in January, I discovered this beautiful vista of ragged buttes and red rock plateaus that caught the brilliant orange of a winter sunrise. The Colorado River was wide and smooth, reflecting all the ambient color. This painting captures the joyful beauty that I love to paint, that which brings me back to Utah time and time again to find a new subject to capture.

I love walking along the river bed in Zion Canyon. Red rock cliffs reach high into the sky around me, and all around me is silent except for the moving sound of water and the wind rustling through the cottonwood leaves. I walk in and out of shadow beneath the overhanging boughs, my mind completely at peace. This painting captures all my love for this landscape.
